Dogs can cause injury without biting; for example, if a dog knocks you over and you break your wrist catching yourself in the fall, you may have a claim. The Statute pertaining animal-caused injuries provides that the owner of an animal is responsible for any injury caused by that animal. This could cover any kind of injury; for example, a car accident caused by a dog who bolts into traffic.
Proper documentation is critical for pursuing a case. It’s good to know who the owner of the dog is; if you can’t find that information, law enforcement may be able to assist. The owner must prove that the animal doesn’t have any communicable diseases by providing a health certificate. As with other personal injury cases, seek medical attention as soon as possible.
